Dear All,

First thanks for this discussion. I too have trouble deciding about Ph.d degree in Education Technology.

I did my bachelors in Information technology in India and worked as software engineer for 3 years . After coming to US, I wanted to do something different other than coding and developing applications. So I decided to do my masters ( special education) understand the field of education especially students with learning challenges.

I want to teach in universities/colleges about integration of technology and education.

Is this the degree for me? Please advice. Are there any good universities offering Ph.d in educational technology online in texas? I visited all their websites but it is either instruction technology or curriculum design.

I'm in the Ed Tech PhD program at Walden University, and everything is online (accept 4 residencies). So far it's great!

Andy,

I completed my EdD work in Instructional Technology and found the experiance to be very rewarding. I currently am a Technology Director in a farily large district in PA and having the curriculum, instruction and assessment backgroup that the EdD program in IT provided was helpful. Anymore school districts need to have an administrator who has a research background to look for new ways to address the no so everyday issues that are occuring in schools. My EdD program provided me with a strong background in reviewing and implementing Assistive Technology Plans etc.

I am not sure what your certiciations are but you may want to try and couple it with you Letter of Eligability for a Superintendents position. An additional certificaiton could lead to a worthwhile job. I have been teaching in the Undergraduate IT program at a local university and loved every minute of it.

I am still looking for EdD program. I found one , but now a bit unsure about current job and funding. My school where I teach only pays about $3000 more a year for a doctorate.

Big investment of 30-40 K to take 30 years to break even. If we had national credentials like in teh professional IT world I would be more likely to jump in and make the investment.. Nathan

I too am actively searching for PhD programs in Educational TechnologyInstructional TechnologyandEducational Psychology . I have located Nova Southeastern University(NSU), . Texas A& M Commerce has an interesting program that seems to be a bit involved, however, the people seem really cool. . I will be researching other schools that have strong psychology, simulation and ed. technology departments like University of Central Florida. It is interesting that schools who research and develop graduate programs of educational technology, instructional technology and the like, have been slow to develop online doctoral programs.

I am currently working through an Ed.D program with the University of Wyoming; they also offer Ph.D. programs. I would recommend them, and I would do the program again given the chance.

I finally found a Ph.D. program that will work for me. Kent State University is offering a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with a Specialization in Instructional Technology. https://www.ehhs.kent.edu/itec/phd.cfm . Best part -- they will be charging in-state tuition fees for non-residence.

Ditto, I have a 1989 MS in Instructional Tech, realizing my current position is a dead end (long story). I was looking for an online doctoral program in ed tech (I did a seminar with Nova Southeastern), and I recently came across this all-online program in Canada: http://cde.athabascau.ca/programs/doctoral/index.php. The faculty looks to be pretty good--best part is, it's only 18 credits. But will that translate into a quality, respected degree? It would be interesting to see where the grads get placed. Anybody heard of it?

BTW, the school also publishes an EXCELLENT book on distance ed, and it's a FREE download/highly recommended:
