PhD Educational/Instructional Technology?
Sorry if this question has come up before, I'm new to the site. I've been contemplating the possibility of going back to school to get a PhD and would love to focus on instructional technology. I'd appreciate and suggestions or feedback on programs from people out there.

I got my Ph. D in Instructional Technology from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale. They have a blended program where you meet on campus for 1 week at the beginning of the term. One week in January and one week in July...2 terms a year. Took me 3 years--2 years of coursework and a year to write my dissertation...great program. I highly recommend it!

I received a PhD in curriculum and instruction with my specialization area as instructional technology from Kansas State University. I am currently at the University of Houston where there is an instructional technology department and an option for PhD in educational technology.

I received my degree online at Walden University (Ph.D. in Instructional Technologies). You do have to attend residencies at various times throughout your program but I found it to be a strong program. I did my dissertation about how rural teachers are using the virtual world Second Life for professional development purposes. There are also KAMs that you will write that allow you to focus on areas in which you have a strong interest.

I am looking at a program with Regents University out of Virginia Beach. I haven't started it yet either. I looks to be mainly online with a summer session on campus. It is a Christian University. I am also hoping to get a PhD or Ed Doc. in Instructional Technology, but I would prefer it to be from a reputable university and totally online. Does such a thing exist??

I received my MA in Educational Technology from Pepperdine and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND their program. A number of members of my MA cadre are now enrolled in Pepperdine's Ed Tech doctoral program. Pepperdine's program is mostly online, seriously challenges your thinking, and encourages you to expand your "thought box" like no other program I have seen. If I had the time and $$ (and didn't have two small children at home) I would be enrolled in their doctoral program, too!

I am thinking about the progam at New Mexico State University. They offer a PhD in Curriculum with an emphasis on technology. I have corresponded with them and they are not accepting applications until next year but you may want to get added to the email list. The info is on this site:

I am currently enrolled in the EdD program at Nova Southeastern with a concentration in ITDE (Instructional Technology and Distance Education). It has been a very rewarding experience. I enrolled in a co-hort group that met three times each semester F2F for three semesters. While it proved to be a good thing for me, I also think it would have been just as good with all online work. I have been challenged and have learned new concepts and ideas on a level that I could never have predicted. Good luck in your decision. I spent five years deciding where to go for my advanced degree.

Yes, Nova offers both - Ph.D. and Ed.D. Try http://www.scis.nova.edu/doctoral/dcte.html. I am doing the Ed.D now but can see that the Ph.D. offers some advantages.
