After reading the article titled "Searchme Simplifies Searching" by Kaya Hardin in the September L&L article, I was very interested to see how the search engine worked. While reading the article, Searchme was described as being an alternative option to conduct an online search, rather than using Google. Google is a great search engine that supplies a lot of results, however, it may not be the most useful search engine when having students conduct a search. Searchme allows the user to narrow down the search by category and it also allows the user to have a quick look at the websites it has searched for, without actually visiting the web page. Searchme seemed to be a very useful search engine, until I went to use it myself and found that it currently does not allow you to do searches because it is being sold. If this search engine actually does work like it says it does, I would be interested to see how it could be used in the classroom.

Kyle,

Thanks for alerting us to this. SearchMe's search engine was online when we went to press, but as far as I can tell, it could not find a buyer and so went offline, apparently permanently. Wikipedia says the company will now focus on the broadband TV market. I guess we all know the online market can be volatile!

Although the engine apparently could not compete with Google in the marketplace, I still think the idea was a good one. The format was much better than Google for facilitating Internet searches for early readers. I wonder if a teacher could use Searchme's image-based approach to searching as inspiration for lessons or tools of their own. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Wow, this is pretty slick for such a cheap setup. I had watched Johnny Lee's video "Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the Wii Remote" and "Foldable Interactive Displays" and was amazed at his ingenuity. This is just another example of the…

Yes! If I were a school principal and were asked, “Do you require your teachers to be proficient in technology before being hired?” I would feel strongly unsettled if I had no measure of proving that my teachers are technology proficient. Teachers n…
