Action Research Studies in the Effective Application of Technology
in the K-12 Music Classroom, Studio, or Rehearsal Hall
Message from Scott Lipscomb, Research Committee Chair

TI:ME is pleased to announce an open call to all its members who are interested in completing an action research project with primary or secondary students involving music and technology. The primary purpose of this funded project is to add to the growing body of literature addressing the application of music technology to the enhancement of music learning. Of special interest are the uses of electronic musical instruments, MIDI sequencing, music notation software, computer-assisted instruction, multimedia and digitized media, including digital recording, and/or Internet communications in developing profiles of "best practice." Teachers who work daily with students to learn music with the aid of such technologies are encouraged to submit an action research proposal. This project, sponsored by TI:ME, has been funded by a generous grant from the National Association of Music Merchants.

A helpful, specially developed Action Research Tutorial will be available on the TI:ME web site to facilitate the development of a research proposal. Proposal budgets may specify an amount up to a total of $1,750. It is anticipated that teacher-researchers will be paid a maximum stipend of $750 with the balance of the grant expenses devoted to essential resources (i.e., hardware, software, instruments, etc.).

The successful applicants will work with a University mentor in the details of research execution and reporting. Results of the study will be posted on the TI:ME website. The timeline for these projects will begin in January 2009 and a written report of the completed project will be due no later than May 31, 2010.

Deadline for proposals: December 15, 2009. More details are available on the TI:ME web site.
