Hi! I'm a methods student at BGSU, and I am working on planning my unit for To Kill a Mocking Bird (TKAM). This unit is for freshmen who are placed in a lower-level English class. These students are somewhat tracked to go to a vocational school. They really struggle with reading, and they don't do much homework outside of class. Because of this, I have to read the entire novel in class. How do I make this interesting for the students? I don't want to stand up in front of the class and just read to them the entire book. My skills in accents and altering my voice is very limited, so having different voices for the characters isn't really an option for me. My mentor teacher has the book on tape but that will also get old I think. Having the students read lengthy parts of the book is not really an option either.  Any advice? I would also love ideas for fun hands-on activities I could do, especially with the end of the book as that is mostly what I am going to be teaching. Thanks! Mel Bruggeman

I would suggest that you have the students watch a movie that is similar to the book. Just like Titanic is a modern play on Romeo and Juliet, Im quite that there's a movie that's a modern play on To Kill a Mockingbird. This would help lay a foundation of interest for your students. Also, I would suggest you assign very small reading assignments, or if you'd really like their insight on the underlying ideas behind to kill a mockingbird, have them discuss those ideas after watching the movie then type a two paragraphs on how a certain idea could apply their lives.
