We'd like to point our parents toward several articles (or other online information) on the benefits of 1:1 computing - a lot of what I've found is a bit heavily research-based (I want to have some of that but would also like some more approachable articles as well).  Are there any particular suggestions that you've found helpful, particularly with parents?

Thanks for any help!

You are invited to the Minnetonka 1:1 iPad Summer Institute on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, from 11:15 am - 4:30 pm at Minnetonka High School.  Learn how iPads were successfully used in a 1:1 environment by all 720 9th grade students at Minnetonka High School during the 2011-12 school year.  Get in-depth background information on everything from the planning, budget, and communication of the pilot program to the training, implementation, and findings.  Hear from staff and teachers about how iPads are being used daily in teaching and learning.  More information about Minnetonka's iPad pilot can be found online.

A Davanni's hoagie box lunch, drinks and snacks are included with registration.  To allow room for visitors from multiple districts to attend, please coordinate with others from your district/company so that no more than six attendees register prior to July 1 for the iPad Institute.  If there are openings after July 1, the cap of six per district/company will be removed.

Please click the link below to register and to view more details, including the agenda and a current list of vendor-donated raffle prizes.  You may also choose to stay in Minnetonka for the two-day 21st Century Learner and Change Conference on July 19 & 20.  You can learn more using the link below:

Hopefully I am commenting in the right spot. We use Google Apps and Moodle as district provided collaboration tools. All students in our district use the 1gb of storage space Google Apps provides for file storage, this is the only space "we" provide the students. This is the first school year they have not have file storage space on district servers and we have not had any complaints. Teachers also have the 1gb of space in Google Apps, but still have space on district servers.

What tools do your schools use to create online collaboration? Do you use a Ning, like this one, or some other platform?

Also, how do you handle file storage OUTSIDE of the school's network?

Jayme,

I like your analogy about not teaching "Pencil and Book."  It is SOO true.

I also enjoyed the video that Stephen shared with us.  You should consider creating an "idea room" where the students can write on the walls when you design your new lab.

Jayme, you can follow @ryanbretag on Twitter. He's done some really nice work with learning spaces.

Leigh, the switch in terminology is key - moving from "1:1 environment" to "technology rich environment" changes the focus entirely. I always say that teachers don't teach "pencil and book" so why should we "teach computers"? I will definitely change the terminology that we use at our school to reflect this. Thank you for providing the words that perfectly embody my philosophy.

Stephen, the video you shared was amazing. We are in the process of designing a new "lab." I forwarded the link to our entire design team, administration, and architect!

@Julie/Leigh/Susan... dead on. Making schools technology-rich is not the same thing as making them learning-rich. Too often, the logistics of making schools technology-rich become so problematic because the larger purpose of creating a learner-centered TRLE is not the focus (and I include teachers as part of those learners). It's essential to not only examine the technology infrastructure, but also the learning infrastructure.

Here's an example of the type of thinking that needs to be coupled with changing the learning environment - in this case, the learning space.
