Book Trailers: Seen Any Good Books Lately?
Book trailers are NOT book reports. Similar to movie trailers, video book trailers are short, minute and a half to two-minute videos that introduce the basic storyline in ways that arouse your audience interest to read THAT book. Engage students in the artful video advertisement or PSA of a book with techniques and creative decisions being made by the director that tells enough to interest but not to spoil the plot. Merging the technology of books with digital tools is an engaging adventure for students – explore resources, ideas, tools, and processes for starting your own book club theater! Join us February 8tth, 5:00 PM SLT @ Atlantis Underwater Paideia Colluseum. SLURL Location: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Eduisland%206/61/156/7

November Article Discussion

Are you finding teaching the 21st century skill of collaboration a challenge? Want some creative ideas on ways to infuse collaboration in your teaching practice? Come join the ISTE SIGMS November article discussion. We will focus our discussion around the ideas presented by Ruth Reynard from an article in The Journal, "More Challenges with Wikis: 4 Ways To Move Students from Passive to Active."

We all know the challenges of teaching today's digital natives! Those of us who have been teaching over several decades have had to adjust our teaching styles to meet the needs of the ever-changing learning styles of our students. Ruth Reynard points out that, "While wikis
provide an interesting and accessible tool for collaborative work with students, there can be an easy shift back to regular teacher-driven methods in their use as it is difficult and challenging to continue to facilitate collaboration throughout a wiki project. That is, as we already know, the technology itself does not develop the skill, nor is it the teacher; the technology is only a tool, and teachers must remain committed to the collaborative process if students are to fully engage and develop the skills necessary to work collaboratively with their peers."

If you are a K-12 media specialist and involved in Second Life, I could use one more person for my panel discussion on Friday, Oct. 9 from 11-12 SL time. This is for the Washington Library Media Association conference in Yakima, Washington. The Second Life panel will meet on the University of Washington Island. Let me know if you can participate! Thanks!

Perhaps we can work to make the virtual environments just as exciting as attending in person. Through ISTE vision and Second Life, folks who can not travel should be able to interact rather seamlessly. Just a thought for my colleagues! I hope everyone had a nice summer...the new school year is finally here!
