ISTE Community

This conversation builds on the discussion started in 2nd Life in the Jan, 2010, AASL-SIGMS Virtual Learning Community meeting hosted by Ernie Cox and Linda Braun.  What types of professional communication tools and channels work for you?  What roles do our professional organizations play in facilitating communication and support.  How do you develop your own personal learning network?  What challenges do you face?

Hi,

Quickly, I think I avoided membership and assoc. in groups after the cost of membership rose according income from student to professional. I went to some conference TIE and other local PD events,.At these conferences some of my peers knew much more about certain things then I didn. I listened to major ideas on ALA and ISTE sites but didn't have the subtle understandings or the "inside know" that my peers did. My library support fell away when Colorado did away with their Regional Library System. Anyway, it wasn't until I asked a peer advice about something, that they stated do you belong to AlA and I stated that I had been a member in the past but not currently and she stated that she really would love to share the information but it was for members only. Wow! I decided that since the state conference was not meeting my needs that I wouldn't attend. I used the money to join ALA, ISTE, and YALSA. So, my communication channels have always been peers, PD, professional journals, personal research, and reaching out. I really wish someone would have told me where they were getting the great articles from because I would have rejoined sooner. Embarrased to send it. My biggest challenge is isolation - geographically great progress has stopped at most places in Pueblo and others are slowly/quickly seeing libraries fall by the wayside.
