I'm a big PLN tweeter, using it mainly for ED, but occasionally for politics or tech-news.  Hope to see you in the twittersphere!

Hi, I have just joined the group. I have been twittering for some years but I only really use it professionally. I enjoy using it at conferences to watch all the great links that appear. I am stilll watching the #ISTE11 and #ISTE2011 feeds using Tweetdeck on my phone. I am not sure how useful it will be in the classroom but am trying to keep an open mind.

I'm still relatively new to Twitter, and picked a name that is "sorta" in use by someone else, but feel free to look me up @nerdyteacher

Hey, I just read an article about using twitter to keep up with current events. The author in this article is referring to college students and the fact that so many make no effort to keep up and be informed with what is going on in the world. One can use twitter to do this. Now most people use it to follow their favorite celebrity, but really, twitter participants are all over the world. I think it would be a neat idea to have high school students use twitter to keep up with current events. They may even have fun doing this!

HERE IS THE LINK:

It's a short article. You should read it!

I see many comments about schools being economically disadvantaged, and this fact is causing teachers to be hesitant about requiring the use of technology to meet classroom objectives. It is understandable to have this concern. My school does not particularly have this problem, but throughout my high school and college education, I have been that economically disadvantaged student. I do not own my own lap top. I am actually using my roomate's right now. Living at home while teaching in my placement has proved to be a challenge when it comes to technology. In Bowling Green, I am able to complete all of my assignments in the computer lab or library. The computer my parents have at home has got to be from the 90s and still has dial up connection for the internet!!! It is actually kind of funny. I go to the local library to complete school work.

I say all of this to say that a student often has other options if there is not access to technology at home. I am sure the school would be willing to allow students to use school resources as well. So teachers should not allow economic disadvantages of students to keep them from using technology in their lessons.

When it comes to using twitter, I believe this is quite accessible because so many students have cell phones. We all know the students love using their cell phones!!!! They would absolutely take advantage of any opportunity they get to use them for school related reasons.
