Great idea to get us a demo of Edmodo. Very slick interface, I can see lots of potential for education. Really like that you can push files and more and the threading makes it easy to follow replies.
BTW on twitter I'm http://twitter.com/jmcconville1000

Hi Pilar! It's great to hear from you! Hope you had a nice summer!

I just set up a group on edmodo--everyone is welcome (and excouraged!) to join!

Here is how to get started:
1. Go to http://edmodo.com
2. In the Upper right hand corner of the screen, click "Sign up! I am a teacher"
3. Create a username and password. (You are required to give your email address as a teacher so that edmodo can contact you if you ever forget your password, need assistance, etc. Your students are not required to give an email address when they sign up. Many schools like this fact).
4. Then you're in!
5. On the left hand panel, you'll see a little link near the word Groups that says "Join" or "Create"
6. Right now, you want to Join the Teachers for Edmodo group--so when you click Join, a box will pop up asking for a Group Code.
Our group code is pwt852

Enter the code and then you're in the group!

If you have trouble or get stuck, just comment here or message me on twitter.

See you on edmodo!

Hi Emily,

I would definitely be interested in a teacher group so as to test it out! Let me know.

Everybody, I'm pilarw on Twitter, btw.

Thanks.

Well you're in the right group! Let us know how we can help you to acclimate to the Twitterverse! If you tell me your twitter name, I can ask my PLN to follow you. That's a start! Then, you can follow those people and you'll have a nice little EdTech group at your fingertips.

Thanks Emily, I hadn't thought about using another email address. It worked, but I am still trying to figure out twitter. Sandy

That's unfortunate Sandra! Twitter probably blocked your account because spam twitterers tend to set up bogus accounts and rarely use them (much like you said you did). With the spike in Twitter's popularity, there has been a spike in Twitter spammers, so they are really trying to crack down. Not sure why they are being non-responsive to your emails though. They should reinstate your account! My only suggestion would be to try to create a new account using a different email address. If you've already tried and been unable to do that, then...keep hounding them! They need to unblock you! Good luck!

Well, here is a real dome scratcher....I set up a twitter account several weeks ago and barely used it. About two weeks after I opened the account, I received a notice that my account was blocked due to "questionable" activity on my part. It has been under investigation since. I recently tried to set up a new account and am blocked from doing that as well. I know I did nothing wrong on the site because I didn't really even use it. I have emailed several times and gotten no response from twitter.com. Any thoughts?

Yes! Edmodo!!! I heard about it at the beginning of this school year on Jose Picardo's amazing site: http://boxoftricks.net and I have been using it with my students (9th graders). They love it! (one student told me that "this is SO the next Facebook!" haha) I love it! And it just works, which is not something that usually happens with emerging technologies--there are usually too many pitfalls to make implementation a simple process. I have a group for each of my classes, and now, we are working on group projects, so each group of students has a group on edmodo--Edmodo allows them to:

*post notes to each other/ have real-time chat conversations
*upload documents that they are working on
*link to websites they found useful in their research
*embed youtube videos that are helpful
*turn in assignments directly to me
*check the calendar to see upcoming due dates
*check the grades that they have received on assignments they've turned in (with comments from me!)
*participate polls posted by me

I can't say enough good things about the application. It provides the students with an online area to collect all of their research and documents and images without having to email each other back and forth (subsequently clogging their inboxes). I have a record of how each student is contributing to the project and I can see how each group is working together. Our larger class groups are great too--for discussion and sharing with the whole class. It's like a combination of the best parts of Moodle, Twitter, and Facebook.

If you are thinking about using edmodo or need help setting up a class of your own, I'd love to help! You can @ reply/Direct Message me on twitter --

If a lot of people are interested...I could even set up an edmodo group for teachers interested in learning about/using edmodo and how teachers are currently using edmodo...no better way to learn how to do something than to try it yourself! Let me know.

Do students need to memorize facts in the digital age? Absolutely! But, I believe the question is a bit misleading. To even ask the question is to misinterpret the focus of education. Suppose we step into the middle of the 21st century and humans...

I love the digital age we are in and sometimes wish I was 16 again. but some things in my mind still need to be memorized. As a US citizen I should be able to easily answer questions about our independence, the Civil War, etc. Call me old fashione...
