I firmly believe that teachers should be tested on their ability to use technology before they are hired. Technology is an essential part of student's lives today and has become an integral part to their learning process. Therefore in order to be an…
Karon Tarver said: The question bothers me because technology became affordable and crept into classrooms in the 1980’s and the focus concerning “should” teachers know how to use (implies simple skill mastery) continues.
I agree. Technology has bee…
I do not think that a test can measure a full set of skills that are required for effective teachers. Take a look at the rubrics for the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS*T). It seems more appropriate that schools systemat…
Let's see, do we test them for speaking ability, classroom management, content knowledge, presentation skills, reading and writing ability? Yes we do. It is done over the course of college and earlier education and during student teaching. I would s…
I believe Doug Johnson mentions OpenOffice in his "Cloud Computing" feature, though not the kids' version. I agree that open source is a big part of closing the digital divide, especially in this economy. Would you be able to write up a brief "tip" (one or two short paragraphs) about your favorite open source resource for the classroom? We are always looking for Tips to publish in our Learning Connections section.
Thanks for the information. Have you covered OpenOffice? (or the more kid friendly - OpenOffice for Kids? If you are looking for some potentially good apps I can recommend - LInux App Finder -- it has many cross-platform apps on it.
When I look at FOSS in K-12 I see it as a method of lowering the cost of entry to computing... it helps us achieve digital equity.
I am curious what articles ISTE has worked on in regards to FOSS and K-12 education. Would you be able to point me to any? Do you know if the subject will be covered this year?

I have just moved into a new position at a school that has 8,000 books and approximately 1,000 students. I am looking at buying more books for students to read and use for curriculum related topics. In Ontario Canada we are lucky that the Ministry of Education and Public Libraries buy databases for students and the public.

I think that we need a balance of the new technologies, databases, iteraractive whiteboards, student response system etc and the old technology such as books, DVDs, E books etc.
Library collections need to be built to meeet the needs of the students and the community. I am building the core collection and adding leisure reading material for the studentsd.

Robin,
First of all, I'm saddened that your program has not realized that software is going out of style! With all of the free stuff on the Internet, expensive software suites are no longer needed as they once were. What I would suggest is looking…
