Technology is not killing critical thinking skills. Technology is one of the most powerful tools for developing the critical thinking skills in our schools today. Let us stop to think for a minute what critical thinking actually refers to. Critical…

I am developing a Global Learning Framework book that focuses on the Philosophy, Methods and Architecture of collaborative learning. There is a lot to play with in it. We have set up a Ning on it. And there is a sub community from Linkedin making re…
Really interesting post Steve. I will look at Seymour Papert's Logo/ Lego constructionism, and the other points you mentioned. Are you affiliated with any university?
Hi Helen, I work in music education with software development and Pamela Burnard has just recently done a comparison between the two at Cambridge University UK as a pilot study. There is also a great study beginning in Finland on mobile technologies…
Hi all,
I have a class website that I have worked very hard on. I created lots of Vodcasts, mini video clips as guides for the students. They have also in turn created their own vodcasts. Here is the class page http://bit.ly/8ptpsf (this is the shor…
Thank you again for all of you for your comments. Keep them coming. I am going to focus my research in the next few years leading up to me dissertation on hand held technologies. I have to agree that it does seem to be the way forward in education.…
It appears I posted my thoughts a bit too late. Good luck with your dissertation. If possible perhaps focus on the larger genre known as handheld computing. Including PocketPCs, iTouch devices and others like the Zii Egg.
Now a PhD student of education after 17 years working in schools of all ages in the UK and the US.
Main interests: How technology can be incorporated into the curriculum and elementary math.
I can see great advantage to the iPhone or iTouch in education. I am pretty sure I am already following you on Twitter, but I will check. This is quite strange to be but it is my first year out of the full time educational setting, in other words for the first time in 16 years I am not a classroom teacher, I am a student at a university. I unfortunately cannot determine what the schools are using, I have to just go in and observe what they are already doing. I just received my IRB permission to do the research on the iPod Touch in Culbreth school in North Carolina. You may find it useful to look up Susan Wells Culbreth School as they are doing exciting things with the iPod Touch with a one-to-one school wide implementation at middle school level. I was thinking of doing a study on how students are choosing to use the iPod Touch, to see if they are choosing to use it for personal games, organizational, or for curriculum purposes, would this be something you are interested in looking at in your school?
On another note, I had a great Christmas and New Year, did you? There was loads of snow, the worst hit was where I used to live near Rochdale and that was the worst they had ever had. We are supposed to get some snow in NC on Friday, but we only get a tiny amount. I have been asked to speak at a conference next week in Ohio and they have 2 foot of snow, so I will be able to get my snow fix there.
I recently purchased an iphone and will be looking at how they can be used in education. I am blown away by the number of apps available and how my kids (Liam 6 and Amy 5) just pick up the educational stuff. I'm really interested in learning more and about the successes you're having with the itouch - I'll be working with 16/17 year olds to look at ways in which mobile devices can be incorporated into lessons. There will be some serious filtering of ideas as the pool is huge!!
The HP project will really kick off in a couple of weeks when we return to school for the new year. 2010 looks to be huge for us and I was going to ask, are you using the ISTE NETS framework as this would make cross examination of data easier. If not we could create a combine survey.
I find some great IT stuff comes through on Twitter - leebond1 - and I'm also looking at how this medium can be used in the classroom.
Well I hope you had a great Christmas and a fantastic New Year. I hear they had tons of snow in Manchester!
Sounds really interesting. Our study will be measured using a lot of the ISTE NETs framework and surveys. We've just taken staff through an orientation phase and the project really gets underway in 2010 for the students as you will have read.
It seems us Brits gets everywhere! I'm from East Manchester originally - raised in Hyde and Dukinfield - lived in Mossley for a few years after leaving the army. Salford Uni and Manchester Met for teaching. Taught in Oldham for 3 years before heading off to the Middle East for almost 10 years. Now in Australia. What's your story? Which school do you work at currently? Got to dash - will chat some more about the project - Lee
Sorry if this question has come up before, I'm new to the site. I've been contemplating the possibility of going back to school to get a PhD and would love to focus on instructional technology. I'd appreciate and suggestions or feedback on programs…
